AIDE MEMOIRE OF ACTING SECRETARY-GENERAL U THANT TO THE NETHERLANDS REGARDING THE TRANSFER OF AUTHORITY OF WEST IRIAN

15 August 1962.

AIDE MEMOIRE

The following modalities have been agreed to by Indonesia and the. Netherlands regarding the transfer of authority of Nest New Guinea (West Irian ) :

    The authority of the Government of the Netherlands over the territory
  1. will be terminated when the Special Representative of the Secretary Gencral takes charge. On the same day the United Nitions flag will be hoisted .
  2. From the same date the withdrawal and repatriation of the armed forces of the Netherlands will begin under the supervision of the Secretary, General's Special Representative and will be concluded as soon as possible .
  3. On the day of the transfer of authority to the United Nations, the Netherlands flag will he hoisted side beside with the United Nations flag and it will fly until 31 December 1963 .
  4. The transfer of authority to Indonesia will effectect is soon as possible after 1 May 1963 .
